Playing Tight Aggressive

Because I get asked a lot about the best way to play tight aggressive, I thought it’s time for a nice tip on how to…

Let me first explain the words ‘tight’ and ’aggressive’.

  • Tight means that you are very selective in choosing your starting hands. You play only premium hands like AA, KK etc.
  • Then there’s aggressive. Aggressive means that, whenever you enter the pot, you’re going to play it as if your life depends on this one hand. You’ll be taking control of the hand by betting your hands really strong and forcing your opponents to a decision for all their chips.

  • The opposite of tight is ‘loose’. If you are a loose player, you are not selective and play with just about any two cards you get in the hole.
  • The opposite of aggressive is ‘passive’. If you are a passive player you don’t take control at all. You always call, never raise.

So let me sum up:

Tight vs. Loose. Tight and loose say something about your starting hand selection.

Aggressive vs. Passive. Aggressive and passive say something about your betting behavior.

Now there’s one thing you need to know. One thing you absolutely must do to become a respected, winning player; PLAY AGGRESSIVE!

You have to play aggressive, no matter what.

Forget passive. Passive players are fish. Losers. If you play passive you’ll never make some decent money. If you play passive and still beat your friends, your friends are even worst suckers.

Aggressive is the way to go.

So you either have to play tight aggressive or loose aggressive, of which tight aggressive is the best way forward.

If you play tight aggressive, you might have to wait a little time until you get the hand you’re looking for, but then when you get in there; you play hardball!

Push your opponents around by re-raising them. Put them all-in when you think they can’t call you. Let them know that in order to play with you, they have to be willing to risk their entire chip stack. That way they’ll think twice about coming in with any hand if you’re still to act behind them.

Tight aggressive simply means; choose your starting hands wisely and play them like a bull.
