Playing Poker Online

Playing online is a whole different discipline than playing ‘live’ poker.

Since you won’t get any reads from faces, talk or body language, you’ll have to focus solely on betting behaviour. That’s all you’ve got. You’re going to have to find patterns in players betting that give away whether they want to play the hand or not.

For Instance; you see a flop of K92, all different suits. A pretty uninteresting flop since there’s no possibility of straights, flushes or full houses. Let’s suppose someone comes out raising more than a pot size bet. What does this tell you? He’s making it a pretty expensive bet to call (relative to the pot size), so he must be trying to prevent someone from calling. You can bet your ass he’s not holding an AK or KK, otherwise he would let someone else in by making it a cheap bet. So what could he have? You know he’s not playing a K2 or 92, no-one does. Well, at least no decent player would. No K9, or he would have made it a cheap bet. not a pocket pair of anything on the board either, cause he would have made triples and let you in on the bet as well.

So what does this leave you with? He could have something like a suited connector with a 9. Like 98s, T9s or maybe even a J9s. Or an overcard with a reasonable kicker, like AJ or AQ. Or even QJ and looking for an inside straight-draw. Or even a pocketpair like 88 or 77.

Of course, had he made a minimum bet it would have been completely different. He would be more likely to have an AK, KK, 99, K9 (probably suited) or maybe even aces.

The funny thing is this: Online poker is so much faster than live poker. You get to see more hands in a certain amount of time and people play faster, more aggressive. Don’t ask me why. Anyhow it is a very good learning ground for anyone because you can get a lot of experience in a short amount time. In my opinion this is one of the biggest advantages when you play online poker.

Especially when you play ‘Sit & Go’ tournaments because you can play a lot of hands for a small, fixed amount of money.

I will get deeper into Sit & Go’s in my next tip. I’ll give you an edge with some very useful tips! So stay tuned.
